About
Brandon Jew and Anna Lee opened Mister Jiu’s in April 2016 in the former Four Seas banquet space on Waverly Place. The kitchen pairs Cantonese technique with Bay Area seasonal produce; Michelin has awarded one star since the restaurant’s first year, and Jew won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: California in 2022. Signature service centers on roast duck with classic pancakes and peanut-butter hoisin, plus à la carte and banquet formats after the restaurant moved away from a mandatory tasting menu. Upstairs Moongate Lounge shares the building for drinks and smaller plates.
Menu highlights
- Peking / Liberty Farm roast duck with pancakes and peanut-butter hoisin
- Scallion milk bread with honey butter
- Seasonal silken tofu and Cantonese-leaning vegetable plates
- Bar and banquet à la carte formats alongside duck-centered menus
Diners say
Public Yelp and Google threads repeatedly praise the room, service, and creative Cantonese-California cooking, with the duck and milk bread named most often. The same reviews warn that checks climb quickly, reservations matter, and opinions on the duck split between raves and complaints about texture, smoke, or value. Many diners frame it as a special-occasion Chinatown table rather than an everyday Chinese meal.
