About

Chef Akira Yoshizumi opened Sushi Yoshizumi in downtown San Mateo in spring 2015 after training in Edomae sushi in Japan and cooking in New York and the Bay Area. The tight cypress counter runs omakase only, emphasizing cured and seasoned fish over torches, truffle, or caviar. Michelin awarded one star from the 2016 guide through 2023; later California guides listed the restaurant as Recommended/Plate rather than starred, while Opinionated About Dining and Chronicle coverage continue to treat it as a serious Peninsula destination. Menu highlights

  • Yohei and higher-tier Yoshizumi omakase progressions
  • Edomae nigiri parade (seasonal bluefin, buri, ankimo, and more)
  • Chawanmushi and cooked appetizer courses before nigiri
  • Tamago and simple dessert close

Diners say

Diners on Yelp, Google, and booking platforms praise pristine fish, quiet focus, and traditional pacing. The same themes stress extreme booking difficulty, high price, and a format that will disappoint anyone wanting fusion sushi or a long à la carte menu. Several notes mention the unmarked storefront and the need to follow reservation instructions closely.
