About

Niki Nakayama opened n/naka in 2011 after selling her Melrose sushi café Azami to fund a modern kaiseki room named from her own name. She co-owns and cooks with spouse and partner Carole Iida-Nakayama; both are Los Angeles–born chefs who source from California, Japan, and a Culver City garden. The meal is a single multi-course tasting (often about thirteen courses) with no à la carte path: delicate broths, sashimi, grilled wagyu or scallops when the season calls, a shokuji sushi stretch, and the one constant Michelin still notes, spaghetti with abalone, pickled cod roe, and black truffle. The Infatuation and Time Out praise the service and Chef’s Table–era demand; Eater’s later dining report still treats it as a singular Japanese American fine-dining night. Michelin lists one star (the room held two from 2019 into 2024). Reservations drop on Tock, typically Sundays a month ahead, and sell out fast; confirm live menu price (recently in the mid-to-high $300s per person before pairings) and the house reconfirmation rules before you chase a seat.

Menu highlights

Diners say

Public reviews praise the pacing, service, seasonal plates, and the calm Overland Avenue room. Recurring friction includes the reservation blood sport, prepaid deposits, a check that climbs steeply with pairings, and a format that does not suit diners who want to order à la carte or keep dinner short. Diners who like it usually plan weeks ahead for a special-occasion tasting, not a casual Japanese night.

Review synthesis as of 2026-07-31. Synthesis of recurring themes in public Yelp and Google Maps reviews sampled July 2026; not a rating or ranking. Cross-checked against n-naka.com, Michelin Guide (live 1-star distinction; soft note on prior 2-star period), The Infatuation, Time Out, Eater LA, and Wikipedia. Soft tasting price and Tock Sunday release: confirm live.
