About

Sushi Gen opened in Little Tokyo’s Honda Plaza in 1980 under chef-owner Toshiaki Toyoshima, who trained in Tokyo and later worked at Tokyo Kaikan before starting his own sushi-only room. The kitchen still runs a traditional Edomae-leaning bar: sashimi and nigiri sets at lunch, denser dinner specials, and à la carte or budget-set omakase at the counter. Time Out, The Infatuation, and Opinionated About Dining keep it on Los Angeles shortlists for quality that does not require a temple-price tasting menu. Lunch specials are the main crowd magnet and usually seat at tables; the counter moves à la carte pieces and chef’s choice once you name a spend. Expect first-come lines, especially midweek lunch, and a room that closes early by Los Angeles standards (dinner often wraps by 8:30 p.m.; closed Sunday and Monday). Official hours and menu notes live on sushigen-dtla.com.

Diners say

Public reviews praise fresh fish, fair pricing relative to Los Angeles sushi, and the lunch specials. The same threads warn about long waits, a no-reservation walk-up habit, early closing, and a busy room that can feel brisk. Counter diners often prefer à la carte or a spend-based omakase over the table sets. People who like it usually want traditional sushi without a tasting-menu bill.
