About

Surawon has occupied the old El Jarrito space on West Olympic Boulevard since 2009, first as a seolleongtang room, then (from August 2018) as a soondubu specialist under Sunny Lee. Lee studied traditional tofu making in Korea and rebuilt the kitchen around silken tofu made daily from organic soybeans, with a black-soybean upgrade that tastes nuttier than the yellow-bean default. The Los Angeles Times flagged that house-made approach when the tofu reboot landed; The Infatuation and Time Out still treat Surawon as the Koreatown soondubu reference for daytime and dinner hours (BCD remains the late-night convenience play). Order a bubbling soondubu with kimchi, seafood, or beef, crack the egg into the pot, and share a combo with short rib, pork belly, or soy-marinated crab if you want more than stew. Seafood pancake, fried mackerel, and stone-pot bibimbap show up often as sides. Closed Wednesdays on many published schedules; confirm hours before a midweek visit.

Menu highlights

  • Soondubu jjigae (house-made tofu; black soybean upgrade)
  • Stew combos with short rib, pork belly, or soy crab
  • Haemul pajeon (seafood-leek pancake)
  • Fried or marinated mackerel; stone-pot bibimbap

Diners say

Public reviews praise the custardy house tofu, black-soybean option, spicy broth, banchan, and combos that turn a solo bowl into a shared meal. Recurring friction includes lunch crowds, waiting for a table at peak, heat levels that can surprise first-timers, and a room that still shows its Mexican-restaurant bones (cactus chandeliers included). Diners who like it usually want soondubu for quality rather than a 3 a.m. pit stop.
