About
Lacha Somtum opened on Hollywood Boulevard in Thai Town in 2014 as a northeastern Thai room built around som tum, after the space’s earlier life as a tea and drink shop. Owner Tanya Miyabi and her family come from the Thailand–Laos border country where papaya salad is everyday food; the printed menu runs well past a dozen mortar-pounded salads with salted crab, raw blue crab, salted duck egg, crispy pork belly, ground catfish, mango, corn, or fruit mixes instead of only green papaya. The Infatuation and Eater keep it on shortlists for Isaan plates beyond the salads too: shrimp paste rice with a painter’s palette of toppings, larb with duck cracklings, raw shrimp with chile-garlic paste, Isaan hot pot, and Thai-style sukiyaki. Soft spice climbs fast; soft drinks from the tea-shop days (Ovaltine mudslides, passion fruit slushies) still cool the burn. Confirm live hours on lachasomtum.com. No Michelin listing as of July 2026.

Diners say
Public reviews praise the som tum variety, honest heat, and Isaan sides that outshine a standard Thai Town takeout menu. Recurring friction includes spice that surprises, a small busy room on Hollywood Boulevard, and a menu that rewards asking for help if you do not read Thai. Diners who like it usually come for papaya salad and sticky rice, not a mild pad Thai night.
