Son and Mai Nguyen opened Golden Deli on West Las Tunas Drive in San Gabriel in 1981, early in the San Gabriel Valley’s Vietnamese restaurant story. The family-run room still draws lines for a clear, lightly aromatic pho broth and for cha gio (fried pork egg rolls) with wrappers that crackle and shatter. Jonathan Gold was writing about weekend spillover lines here by the early 1990s; The Infatuation, Eater, Time Out, and L.A. TACO keep treating the original as an SGV reference when a Little Saigon drive is not on the calendar. The menu runs long (pho combinations, vermicelli, rice plates, banh mi, lime soda), but most tables still start with egg rolls and a bowl.
