About

The Tran family opened Pho 79 in Garden Grove in 1982, naming the room for the year they arrived in the United States. The kitchen is known for a long-simmered oxtail beef broth and a North Vietnamese-leaning pho menu that helped introduce the form to Orange County diners. In 2019 the James Beard Foundation named Pho 79 an America’s Classics restaurant; Michelin has also listed it as a Bib Gourmand. Cash-only service and frequent waits remain part of the Little Saigon pilgrimage rhythm.

Diners say

Reviewers on Yelp and Google Maps repeatedly praise the broth depth and the sense of a neighborhood institution. The same conversations warn about long waits, cash-only payment, and a no-frills room. Diners who make the drive usually treat it as a Little Saigon essential rather than a quick LA County lunch.
