Hanoi House opened in late 2016 at 119 St. Marks Place from Sara Leveen and Ben Lowell, Stephen Starr alumni who built a plant-lined room for northern-leaning Vietnamese cooking on the Alphabet City end of the strip. Opening chef John Nguyen (Orange County roots) set an early mix of classics and freer California-Vietnamese moves; the kitchen has continued under later chefs. Signatures include gỏi cuốn with housemade pork sausage and crispy wonton bits, Hanoi-style phở bac (long-simmered beef broth, filet and brisket, parsley, pickled garlic and house chili on the side rather than a Saigon-style herb pile), bún chả Hà Nội with grilled pork and spring rolls, papaya salad with crispy pig ear, and shaking beef with bone marrow. The Infatuation still ranks the summer rolls and phở among the city’s best; Eater and Grub Street covered the opening wave. Sibling Hanoi Soup Shop later opened two doors down for a more casual counter. Book on Resy; the sidewalk patio books up on warm nights.
