About
Saigon Social is chef-owner Helen Nguyen’s Orchard Street restaurant for Vietnamese comfort food with a twist. After sold-out pop-ups and a planned March 2020 opening that hit the pandemic shutdown, she ran takeout and community meals from the former Mission Cantina space before opening full dine-in in March 2022. Nguyen trained at Restaurant Daniel and frames the menu around heritage cooking filtered through classic technique. Signatures include bún chả Hanoi (grilled pork, vermicelli, herbs, and the sweet-sour dipping broth), oxtail fried rice, a bánh mì-dressed burger, lime-leaf chili chicken wings, and seasonal specials such as whole fried Cornish hen with chicken-fat rice. Pete Wells gave it two New York Times stars and a Critic’s Pick in 2022; the same year Nguyen was a James Beard Best Chef: New York State semifinalist.
