About
Chang’An opened in October 2013 on False Creek under the Granville Street Bridge, in the renovated former Nu space, as the first North American room for China’s Shaanxi China Folk’s Restaurant group. The name points to Xi’an, the ancient capital, and the kitchen leans Northern Chinese and Shaanxi: cumin and chile heat, hand-pulled noodles, lamb, and a Peking duck service that Michelin describes as theatrical. Executive chef Leo Wang (Wang Zonggui), originally from Sichuan with more than a decade cooking in Xi’an, leads the room. Chinese Restaurant Awards have placed Chang’An Best Fine Dining and Best Northern Chinese in earlier years, Best Peking Duck in 2018, Best Northern Chinese again in 2022, No. 2 on the inaugural 2025 Elite 30 Canada list behind Dynasty, and No. 7 in 2026’s Elite 30. Michelin recommends the restaurant.
Duck must be reserved ahead by phone. It arrives tableside with a rum flambé, carved for crisp skin and meat, then returns as soup or a peppery stir-fry from the carcass. Without the duck commitment, the menu still runs biang biang and cold chili-sesame noodles, pan-fried chive pork dumplings, roast lamb, wok-fried cumin duck bones, and pricier seafood specials. Floor-to-ceiling windows look onto Granville Island and Burrard Bridge; lunch and dinner seatings both book for celebrations and out-of-town guests. Dress leans smart casual. Expect a check that sits with downtown fine dining rather than Richmond plaza dim sum.
Come when you want Shaanxi and Northern Chinese ceremony with a waterfront view, and when duck theater is the point of the night. Pair with Dynasty for Broadway Cantonese banquet instead, or Jade and Chef Tony when the group is already in Golden Village for yum cha.

Diners say
Diners talk about the False Creek sunset view, the duck presentation, and noodles with real chew. Regulars and awards chatter treat Chang’An as the city’s Shaanxi fine-dining landmark rather than a casual noodle shop. Groups book the duck for birthdays and visiting parents; solo or smaller tables lean into noodles and dumplings without the ceremony.
Caveats cluster on price, service that can feel uneven when the room is slammed, and a formal pace that rewards a reservation and a duck order placed ahead. People hunting cheap Xi’an hand-pulled lunch usually stay in Richmond. Chang’An is the waterfront Northern Chinese night.
