About

Lunch Lady opened July 1, 2020, on Commercial Drive in partnership with Nguyễn Thị Thanh, the Ho Chi Minh City soup vendor Anthony Bourdain nicknamed “Lunch Lady” on No Reservations. The Vancouver kitchen, developed with chef Benedict Lim and refined with Thanh, translates Saigon street soups and snacks with Pacific Northwest ingredients. Michelin’s Bib notes fried prawns with fish sauce, herb-heavy beef carpaccio, garlic fried noodles, and noodle soups. The restaurant reports consecutive Bib awards after opening. Expect a busy East Side room and a menu that rewards ordering starters plus a soup.

Menu highlights

  • Rotating and signature noodle soups
  • Garlic fried noodles
  • Fried black tiger prawns with fish sauce
  • Beef carpaccio with herbs
  • Salad rolls
  • Wagyu beef noodle soup (when listed)

Diners say

Reviewers praise soup depth, herb-forward starters, and the Bourdain backstory made tangible on the plate. Common caveats: decision paralysis from a large menu, waits or reservation pressure, and some dishes reading richer or oilier than street-stall expectations. Many diners say to share starters before committing to a full noodle bowl.
