About

Chef Tony Xu opened Chengdu Taste on Valley Boulevard in Alhambra in June 2013 and quickly reset expectations for Sichuan cooking in the San Gabriel Valley. The kitchen leans into tongue-numbing peppercorn heat rather than dialing spice down for newcomers, with imported ingredients and Chengdu-style signatures that later inspired imitators across the basin. Michelin lists the Alhambra room, and LA Weekly, PBS SoCal, and local guides still point to toothpick lamb and mom’s preserved chili fish as house references. Later Chengdu Taste locations followed in Rosemead, Rowland Heights, and beyond; this page covers the original Alhambra address.

Diners say

Reviewers on Yelp and Google Maps consistently call out bold mala heat, generous portions, and the toothpick lamb. The same conversations return to long waits (especially evenings and weekends), a casual strip-mall room, and spice levels that can overwhelm if you order without asking. Diners who like it usually want full Sichuan intensity, not a mild Americanized menu.
